The Poetry Circle is offered in partnership with BCLIR, the Brown Community of Learning in Retirement, as a part of the Providence Community Library's mission of commitment to life-long learning.
If you have not read poetry recently, you may be surprised to discover that age and experience have broadened your appreciation of how poets help us to see the world in a different light. Short and longer works from the modern era as well as from previous centuries will be explored.
Group members read poems aloud with attention to how the language serves to heighten meaning. Inexperienced readers of poetry are invited to join the group, along with those already familiar with its pleasures.

Join us for an introduction to this widely used social networking service where you'll learn how to set up an account and edit your Facebook profile; post your status & find and add friends.

Flash Fiction workshop

Kathryn Kulpa and Susan Hradil, editors of the Newport Review, will be giving a Flash Fiction Workshop at the Rochambeau Library on 4 successive Saturday afternoons September 11 - October 2.
Kathryn Kulpa is editor-in-chief of Newport Review. Her fiction collection Pleasant Drugs won the Mid-List Press First Series Award, and her short stories have been published in Seventeen, Florida Review, The Pedestal, Monkeybicycle and other journals. She has taught writing at URI, The Learning Connection, and in public libraries throughout Rhode Island.
Susan Hradil, fiction editor of Newport Review, is a graduate of Hunter College and Brown University. Her teaching experience includes Oberlin College, RISD, and Brown, as well as elementary and middle schools. She has published work in Ontario Review, The MacGuffin, Amherst Review and other journals.
Newport Review is a biannual online journal featuring stories, poems and memoir from local, national and international writers.
The workshop will focus on generating new work and revising stories with the goal of publication.

The Voices of Homelessness Speaker's Bureau presentation

The Voices of Homelessness Speakers Bureau is a new project started by the Rhode Island Coalition of the Homeless this past Spring. They are a group of homeless and formerly homeless individuals who provide an insider's perspective on homelessness. Their mission is to change beliefs, break stereotypes, and clear up misconceptions about homelessness through the sharing of their own compelling, personal stories.

The Greg Abate Quartet

Known as "the Prince of Be-Bop", recording artist and international performer Greg Abate (saxophones, flute) returns for a one-night-only free concert sponsored by The Friends of Rochambeau. Greg "blew us all away" when he last played at Rochambeau and we're thrilled to have him back.
Greg is an international jazz star who tours up to 150 days per year. He began his career as lead alto sax for the Ray Charles Orchestra and has played with the Artie Shaw Orchestra as well as his own groups. He has recorded with many jazz greats including James Williams, Claudio Roditi, George Mraz, Richie Cole, Kenny Barron, Red Rodney, and Herb Pomeroy, and one of his numerous albums, Evolution, received Grammy nominations in four categories.
