The theme of this year's summer reading program is A Universe of Stories - an inspiring title for readers of all ages! PCL has worked with the City of Providence and several partner organizations to create more than 400 fun learning activities and free performances which are designed to encourage students to start reading - and keep reading - all summer long. We want children to enjoy reading and become lifelong readers! Students can sign up for the summer reading program at any PCL location and earn prizes for reading every day.
Special kickoff parties are planned at most PCL locations, starting with South Providence Library on June 18: check this page for details. A full calendar of special events and entertainers at all libraries can be found here.
Bookmark this page for easy access to all the information and links you need to organize your child's summer learning, including the City's Passport to Summer Learning, new summer reading punchcards for teen readers and the Providence READsquared platform which tracks reading, earning points and badges as a reward for participating in summer learning activities. Recommended reading lists for Providence Schools, as well as several independent and private schools can be found here.
Our popular Mobile Library project, Summer Reading in the Schoolyard, funded by United Way RI, will visit ten public elementary schools on a regular weekly schedule from Monday, July 1 to August 23. The mobile library will carry an wide array of books, access to technology and internet, games (including life size board games) and math and literacy activities. Breakfast and lunch will be available through the City of Providence Summer Meals Program. Additionally, we will offer Ready for Kindergarten school readiness workshops in English and Spanish at all ten schools. Check out the schedule here.
The PCL Summer Reading Program starts on June 25 and ends August 24 at all locations. If you have a creatively-minded middle schooler, learn about our PVD Young Maker Summer Camps. Have a great summer!
