The First Amendment & the Free Press: Two Events at PCL

April 17, 2019 - 9:02pm -- jfuentes

First Amendment and the Free Press
Monday, April 29 7:00PM - 8:30PM
Rochambeau Library

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

So reads the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. However, some believe that the freedom of the press to express the truth or demand answers from government increasingly is under attack. The New England First Amendment Coalition (NEFAC) defends, promotes and expands public access to government and the work it does. NEFAC's featured speaker at this event, Gregory V. Sullivan, has served as general counsel for the Union Leader Corporation for the past 42 years. He teaches First Amendment Media Law at Suffolk University Law School in Boston and at the Nackey S. Loeb School of Communications in Manchester, N.H.

Looking ahead, a second NEFAC event at PCL will take place at Wanskuck Library on June 6 at 6:00PM, featuring a stellar panel consisting of Edward Fitzpatrick (Providence Journal), academic authority Dr. Paola Prado, Pulitzer Prize-winning former journalist Mike Stanton and Tim White (WPRI 12 Eyewitness News).
