Make-A-Kinder Providence Make-A-Thon at PVDFest

Make-A-Kinder Providence Make-A-Thon @PVDFest

PVD Young Makers will host its first ever Make-A-Thon in partnership with PVDFest and the Rhode Island Mini Maker Faire at City Hall.  With a sub-theme of Make-a-Kinder Providence, teams of youth will design, build and develop ideas to improve the quality of life in the city.

Teams will have access to professional coaching and PVD Young Makers tools and materials during the weekend, all on site at City Hall, including:

Sewing machines
Laser cutting
3D printing
Vinyl cutting
Prototyping materials
Electronics
Robotics
Fabric

Selected teams will present their ideas on Sunday 2:30PM - 4:30PM to a panel of experts for feedback and encouragement. The judges will be community leaders, business owners, educators, and government leaders, who have resources to help move well-formed ideas forward. Prizes are yet to be announced.  

Members of the public will have an informal opportunity to try out tools and materials on the Sunday without competing in the Make-a-Thon. Here is the full schedule for the weekend:

Saturday – Makers Only
Doors open at 9am

Make-a-Kinder Providence originated through 1,000 Acts of Kindness, an initiative founded by Rose Molina (social worker at Juanita Sanchez high school {JSEC}). Mayor Jorge Elorza has adopted the pursuit and the Mayor's Office and PVD Young Makers is collaborating with JSEC's 1,000 Acts of Kindness to help support students to make products to sustain their Acts of Kindness.
