Mind in the Making
Thursdays, October 17 - December 12, 10:00AM - 12:00PM
Olneyville Library will offer a series of free training courses to parents with young children as part of a pilot project called the Olneyville Preschool Hub. The courses will help parents equip their preschool-age children with essential social-emotional skills, as well as school readiness skills for those entering kindergarten in fall 2020. The first course, Mind in the Making, will take place over an eight-week period. The training will be conducted in English and facilitated by Tania Quezada, Director of Family and Community Partnerships, Ready to Learn Providence.
Based on a book by Ellen Galinsky (Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs), the course demonstrates that seven skill sets are required for success, including focus and self-control, communicating, making connections, critical thinking, and taking on challenges. Using a two-generation approach, parents engage in various, multi-week learning opportunities that support their children’s learning at home. Parents attending this course are welcome to bring their preschool-age children (ages 3 - 5) to the library but library staff cannot supervise babies or toddlers. While the adults learn, a qualified literacy preschool teacher, Ernestine Hanly, will provide literacy-oriented activities for preschool-age children in another part of the library. Ms. Hanly recently retired from the Cranston Public School system, where she worked as an Itinerant Early Childhood Special Educator and Diagnostic Prescriptive Teacher for nearly 30 years.
More courses are scheduled for early 2020. Some additional good news is that the launch of the Olneyville Preschool Hub will allow Olneyville Library to extend its hours on two days per week (Mondays and Thursdays) in order to serve the neighborhood better. These extended hours will occur in three, ten-week modules. The Olneyville Preschool Hub is made possible thanks to a generous grant from United Way of Rhode Island's Olneyville Community Fund.
