Get Ready to Build a Better World!

If it's June, it must be time to sign up for this year's Summer Reading Program, which has the theme "Build a Better World." Join us this summer for great books, special activities and free performances by entertainers. Children can earn prizes for reading just 20 minutes every day! Who thought that beating the "summer slide" could be such fun?

Mayor Jorge Elorza invites parents and students to the EAT, PLAY, LEARN, the official summer kickoff event about access to high quality, affordable, safe, educational, creative, summer programs in Providence. PCL's Mobile Library will be there! You can play our lifesize board games, use our mobile computer lab (with WIFI), read and relax with a great book, and even get a library card!

Indian Cooking - an Ancient Art

Join Sanjiv Dhar for a program on the flavors and healing properties of Indian cuisine. Sanjiv will be cooking Carrot and Vegetable Thoran (Dices of carrots, green beans, cauliflower and sweet potatoes in a mustard, ginger, garlic and dry coconut tempering) and Khichdi (a mix of lentils and basmati rice with ghee and whole spices.)

Spanish GED Graduation Plus Summer/Fall Classes

The sixth annual graduation for PCL's Spanish-language GED students took place Saturday, June 17 at Knight Memorial Library.  More than 100 students participated in the 2016 -2017 program, with 31 students passing 1-4 tests required to get the GED certificate.At the time of writing,we anticipated that 10-12 students would have passed all four subjects required by the GED test by the day of the ceremony. Congratulations to all students, as well as to dedicated teacher Hipolito Reyes and computer instructor Emilia Perez!

Jazz Concert - by the Original Mango Trio!

If you love jazz and know the local jazz scene, you won't want to miss this concert! Come listen to some cool jazz performed by the Roots Cultural Center's original Mango Trio of Mibbit Threats, Zeffro Gianetti, and Richard Hundley. Renowned storyteller and friend of PCL, Len Cabral, who founded the legendary Roots Cafe in Providence, will be on hand to give some history and perspective about the Cafe.

On May 29, former PCL Board member Almas Kalafian spoke at the Memorial Day Remembrance for Survivors of the 1915 Armenian Genocide at the Armenian Heritage Park on Douglas Avenue. In her address, Almas recognized the Smith Hill Library for “providing Armenians with Educational, Cultural, and Social Excellence” for nearly a century:
