Providence Talks Play Groups at PCL

Providence Talks is an innovative learning model that helps parents and educators use more words and expose children to more language during the critical brain development period of birth to three and a half. Children need to hear about 21,000 words a day for optimal development but research shows that many young children, particularly in low-income households, are exposed to far less language. By age four, these children will have heard many million fewer words than their peers in more affluent households, putting them at a developmental and educational disadvantage.

Business Education Series from RIHCC (in Spanish)

The RI Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (RIHCC) is partnering with PCL to offer a Business Education series that will cover the fundamentals of starting up and running a business.

Get to Grips with your Finances at Moneysmart Workshops

April is Financial Literacy Month! PCL is offering a wide range of activities and workshops designed to help consumers of all ages get to grips with personal money management. Many workshops take place during Money Smart Week (March 30 - April 6), a national awareness campaign created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to help consumers better manage their personal finances. 

Meet Author Anika at our Dia Day Celebration

Writer Anika Aldamuy Denise will be a special guest at PCL's annual Dia Day celebration at Knight Memorial Library on Saturday, April 27, 3:00-5:00pm. The author will read and discuss her book Planting Stories:The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré. The picture book is a biography of storyteller, puppeteer, and New York City’s first Puerto Rican librarian, who championed bilingual literature.

Access 30,000 of the World's Best Movies with Kanopy

PCL added the popular on-demand film streaming service, Kanopy, to its digital services on March 1. PCL library card holders can sign up on this page and watch up to eight videos a month; access to each selected video is retained for up to 72 hours. Films can be viewed on any computer, television, mobile device or platform by downloading the Kanopy app for iOS, Android, AppleTV, Chromecast or Roku.

"Pequenos Autores Bilingues" - a Story-Writing Contest for Bilingual Kids

Once again, PCL is taking part in the national Día de Los Niños/ Día De Los Libros celebrations by launching "Pequenos Autores Bilingues,"a bilingual story-writing contest for youth.

The competition is aimed at kids aged 7-12, with prizes in two age categories:7 to 9 and 10 to 12. The winners will be announced at our annual Día de Los Niños/ Día De Los Libros celebration at Knight Memorial Library on April 27 3:00PM - 5:00PM. 

Long Story Short: Micro-Courses at South Providence Library

Long Story Short: Micro-Courses with Brown
Thursdays, monthly 6:00PM – 7:30PM
South Providence Library

This new series of presentations brings Brown University faculty members to South Providence to share an interesting text, a short talk and discussion, all inspired by the courses they teach at the university.

Come learn something new and talk about how these interesting ideas connect to everyday life! Pizza is provided, as well as a homework tutor for students in grades K through 6.
