Zennovation Grant Boosts PCL's Virtual Reality Initiatives

The Zennovation Fund at United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI) has awarded PCL a grant of $5,000 to purchase Virtual Reality (VR) equipment for use at its nine neighborhood locations. The grant will allow more than 20 students to interact simultaneously with VR technology, enable PCL to expand its VR project, Virtual Providence and plan new VR ventures with other Rhode Island based partner organizations.

If you have a Middle Schooler who is into design and technology skills, take a look at these fantastic FREE Advanced Course Network Summer camps offered by FabNewport and Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art (RIMOSA) at PCL locations! 

Please note that these camps must be booked through the Rhode Island Department of Education website at the 
Rhode Island Advanced Course Network Registration Portal page, not via the libraries.

PVD Young Maker Opportunities Near You

PCL's new makerspaces have received an very positive reception at all locations. The materials and  machines found in our makerspaces offer endless opportunities for creativity.  Assisted byFabNewport and PCL staff members, kids love the fact that they receive badges as proof of the new skills they have acquired using the vinyl cutter, laser cutter, sewing machines, 3D printer, Dash Robot and Heat Press.Teens learn the creative process from beginning to end; from initial idea to an end product that they get to take home or even give away as a gift!

Spring Comes to PCL!

After a tough late winter, it's a pleasure to see the trees and flowers around our libraries bursting bud and filling the neighborhoods with color.

Tulips donated by the Peace Flag Project and planted by the Library's Friends group were recently in full bloom at Knight Memorial Library."Many people have slowed and stopped on Elmwood Avenue to savor the intensity of the blooms" said Knight Memorial Friend Doug Victor, "It's a testimony to how transformative the smaller things can be," he added.

New Teen Room Completed at Mount Pleasant

Thanks, Jo-Ann Ryan, for the CDGB funds that made this work possible!

Teens need their own space - and now young library users at Mount Pleasant Library will get exactly that!

Part of the floor area was partitioned off for the use of the 12-17 crowd, thanks to a Community Development Block Grant made available to PCL by Councilwoman Jo-Ann Ryan.  

Library staff are working on the layout of furniture and materials in the new teen space. More images to come!

Summer It Up is Seeking Volunteers

Summer It Up! is a multi-faceted day camp and tutoring program for middle school students, designed mainly to sustain and to improve math and literacy skills during the summer. Partners in the project are Gilbert School Middle School, Friends of Knight Memorial Library and Bucklin Park & Macgrane Pool.Summer It Up! is currently seeking volunteers to help with the 2018 program.
