Back in the Fall, Providence College (PC) graduate student Lizzie Kravitz suggested that PC's annual Book Drive should benefit Smith Hill Library. Lizzie, together with Monique Walmsley, a student interested in library work, met Smith Hill Librarian Alan Gunther and Youth Services Specialist Jennifer Romans in order to decide what books would best meet the needs of Smith Hill. They came up with a list of 50 desired books focusing on black characters, in honor of February's Black History Month. PC Students and faculty subsequently bought new copies of the books on the list and donated new and gently used copies of other books.
On March 28, Lizzie and members of the PC Student Congress, Kelsie LeFerriere and Gabrielle Dess, delivered 275 books to the Smith Hill library and the staff were thrilled to receive them. Thank you, students and staff of PC! As well as providing PCL with new books, PC faculty and students are currently offering a program, the Wonder Book Club, at Wanskuck Library, as well as providing student support for afterschool activities.
