When her library closed its doors due to COVID-19, Duongrattha Siv (known as Siv), clerk supervisor and sewing instructor at Mount Pleasant Library, turned her crafting skills to making sought-after, reusable cloth masks.
Initially making masks for her best friend, a nurse, and other persons in need who approached her, Siv connected to a local Facebook group, SewHopeSNE, which coordinated efforts to supply washable masks to hospitals and front line workers. To inspire others, she created an instructional video, How to Sew a Cloth Face Mask, which is now one of the most viewed programs on Providence Community Library's YouTube channel.
To date, Siv has made over 200 masks."I make face masks and they go right out of the door," declares Siv. She also makes small versions for children. "It hurts my heart to sew them but little ones need to be protected, too."
A big thank you to Siv and ALL the PCL staff who are sewing masks to support our community at this time!
NOTE: By order of the Governor, from Friday, May 9, all people in Rhode Island must wear a face mask in both indoor and outdoor public areas.
