It’s Amnesty Week At PCL!

Do you have overdue library materials? Good news! All this week, from Monday, April 11 to Saturday, April 16 we’re holding our annual amnesty event! Simply return your overdue items and donate non-perishable food in exchange for fines - one can of food for every $20 of fines owed. We’ll waive the fines and the all food collected will be given to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

Please join us at our special party at Mount Pleasant Library, 315 Academy Avenue, from 12:00P.M. - 3:00P.M. We’ll be celebrating PCL Amnesty Week, National Library Week and Rhode Island Library Awareness day, all rolled into one! We’ll have free pizza courtesy of Domino’s, a performance by the amazing Providence brass band What Cheer? Brigade and the unique talents of comic book illustrator and improv artist Eric Fulford.

Join Us for Our Fundraiser “Strengthening Our Roots” – May 4

Support your library! We invite you to enjoy delicious hors d’oevres, drinks and entertainment in elegant surroundings for our 2016 fundraiser, “Strengthening Our Roots,” 6:00PM -9:00PM at Hotel Providence, 139 Mathewson Street. Money raised through sponsorships, ticket sales and a 50/50 raffle promotion will be used to buy new books and other library materials and fund educational and cultural programming at PCL’s nine neighborhood locations.

50/50 Raffle Tickets On Sale Now! Better Odds Than Powerball

If you can’t attend our “Strengthening Our Roots” fundraiser, you can still help PCL to raise money by purchasing the raffle tickets that are on sale at all PCL locations. Tickets cost $5 each or three tickets for $10. The winning ticket holder will receive half the proceeds of all raffle tickets sold! The winning ticket will be drawn at Hotel Providence on May 4. Please note that, for legal reasons, raffle tickets are not available for purchase online.

Coming Soon – Money Smart Week!

Saving for college? Preparing for retirement? Repairing your credit? Just wish you were better at managing your money? Providence Community Library (PCL) is partnering with local experts to offer free financial workshops during Money Smart Week, a national awareness campaign created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to help consumers better manage their personal finances. PCL‘s free workshops from April 23 -30 will cut through the confusion, help you better understand financial issues and plan for the future.

Thanks to a generous $15,000 grant from the Otto H. York Foundation, PCL has recruited nine high school student interns, aged 14 – 18, to create compelling youth programs, mentor younger children and serve on PCL’s Teen Advisory Council.  Welcome to Phoebe (Fox Point), Eder (Knight Memorial), Valentina (Mount Pleasant), Ameenat (Olneyville), Ryan (Rochambeau), Izzy (Smith Hill), Chantel (South Providence), Kankan (Wanskuck) and Dylan (Washington Park)!

Cradle to Crayons – Spring Session

Do you have a baby or toddler in your family? Would you like to learn how to raise a child who loves reading, learn from childcare experts and make new friends along the way? Then Cradle to Crayons is for you! Our Cradles to Crayons program is suitable for newborns to children age 3 years and older siblings are also welcome. We’ll introduce you to new books, songs and rhymes and show you how to share them with your child. Cradle to Crayons spring session will run April –June at Fox Point, Knight Memorial, Mount Pleasant, Olneyville, Smith Hill, South Providence and Washington Park.

Living Literature Performance of “The Wright Brothers”

Living Literature will present a 50- minute readers’ theater-style rendition of Pulitzer Prize winner

David McCullough’s book “The Wright Brothers” at Rochambeau Library on Saturday, April 23, at 1:00PM. The book was selected by Rhode Island Center for the Book as the title for this year’s One Book, One State community read program, Reading Across Rhode Island.
