PCL Spelling Bee: Big Bucks for Big Words

More than 90 people squeezed into a packed AS220 on January 28 to enjoy a good-natured war of words that raised valuable funds for PCL. The contest got off to a gentle start but quickly got more  challenging for competing spellers with selections such as whippoorwill, oleaginous, hoyden and objurgate. In the end, there could only be one winner and Rebecca Maxwell lifted the coveted title "Best Speller of the Year" after acing the winning combo hartebeest /caliph; Ian Cozzens was runner-up.

Romeo & Juliet: A Special Discount for Providence Community Library Patrons

This Valentine’s Day weekend, Festival Ballet Providence (FBP) will present the world premiere of a new adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays. Running February 10-12, 2017 at The Vets in Providence, this new work is a collaboration between guest choreographer Ilya Kozadayev and Gamm Theatre artistic director Tony Estrella. It weaves Shakespeare’s text, spoken live on stage, with Kozadayev’s bold new choreography.

Having a Winter Blast With Minecraft

If it's January, it must be time for Knight Memorial Library's annual Winter Blast Minecraft Challenge! Kids and teens are invited to make wintery creations in Minecraft for a chance to win a prize! The competition runs January 17-21 and winners will be announced January 24. For information, contact Melissa Rivera

Last Call for ESL Classes!

Winter/Spring classes begin January 23, 2017 at several locations and include tuition in grammar, conversation and writing. Register at the front desks or call the library. Rochambeau Presents "East Side Cinema"

Rochambeau Library is starting a film series, East Side Cinema, in partnership with Community Church of Providence. There will be two movies each month, one at Rochambeau Library, 708 Hope St., and the other at Community Church of Providence at 372 Wayland Ave. The first film, Woody Allen's Purple Rose of Cairo (PG, 1985), will be shown at Rochambeau at 7:00P.M. on January 30. There will be a discussion following the film. Attendees are invited to bring sweet or savory snacks to share. All are welcome!
