Smith Hill Library Marks the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide With Cultural Series April is Armenian Heritage and Genocide Remembrance Month

April 24, 1915 was the beginning of the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks. The Smith Hill branch of Providence Community Library (PCL) will host a celebration of Armenian culture and a remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide during the month of April. The Armenian community has flourished in Rhode Island and especially in Smith Hill. Please join us for a series of events for both youth and adults made possible by a collaboration between Providence Community Library, The Friends of Smith Hill Library, Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church and Subway Restaurant #48433 of 539 Smith Street, Providence.

The 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide: A Presentation by Anna-Marie Danayan
Wednesday, April 8, 2015: 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Anna-Marie Danayan is a junior at Rhode Island College. She has given several presentations on the Armenian Genocide including those at Cranston City Hall, Worcester Knights of Vartan Organization, and Times Square, New York City.

An Introduction to the Armenian Alphabet and Language for Kids
Monday, April 13, 2015: 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Nvard Danayan is the Principal of the Holy Translators Armenian School at Sts. Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church.

Armenian Costume and Lifestyle
Tuesday, April 14 2015 4:00p.m.-5:00p.m.

Children will learn about traditional Armenian costume and clothing throughout history, as well as shields, musical instruments and other items of daily life. Youth will then work on art projects based on what they have learned. The program will be conducted by Jennifer Romans, Children’s Specialist at the Smith Hill Library.

Armenian Art Day
Tuesday, April 28, 2015 4:00p.m.-5:00p.m.

Children will make their own art in the style of Armenian artists. The program will be conducted by Jennifer Romans, Children’s Specialist at the Smith Hill Library.

Armenian Heritage and Culture Contest
The Friends of Smith Hill Library and Subway Restaurant #48433 of 539 Smith Street, Providence, will sponsor a month-long Armenian Heritage and Culture Contest for youth. The contest will have three categories: 1) Poetry, 2) Art, and 3) Photography. Each category will have first, second, and third place prizes. Entries should reach the Smith Hill Library by 8:00p.m. on Wednesday, April 22. Prizes will be awarded at a celebration on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 4:00-5:00 PM at the Smith Hill Library. Refreshments will be served.
