Providence Community Library Challenges Bilingual Children to Create Completely Original, Illustrated Story Books

Published Date:
February 26, 2016

A Panel of Judges Will Select Winners, Who Will be Honored at a Celebration on April 30

Providence Community Library (PCL) invites children ages 6-12 to write and illustrate an original story in English and Spanish, turn it into a real book and then submit it as an entry into PCL’s annual bilingual story-writing contest.  The Library is offering free story-writing, illustration and book binding workshops, taught by professional artists, to inspire the young authors and artists.  The closing date for entries is April 15.

The bilingual story-writing contest is a popular event on the PCL calendar. Last year, more than 50 children submitted original, hand-made books as they competed for prizes. The contest is just one element in a creative program of activities leading up to El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), a celebration of books and literacy that takes place every year at the end of April. PCL's commitment to providing high quality educational and cultural programming for Spanish speaking and bilingual children is vital for the city; according to data from the Providence Public School District, approximately 64 percent of the student population is Hispanic, 19 percent are English Language Learners and nearly 60 percent come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken.
